Advice
Would you like some advice or do you need help for someone and/or yourself? Phone Veilig Thuis on this free national helpline: 0800-2000.
You will hear a recorded message asking you for the name of the place where you live or that of the person you are phoning for. You will then be put through straight away to a member of staff in the right region. This number is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Dutch language
If you do not speak Dutch, or it is difficult for you to express yourself in Dutch, please ensure that someone can help you with the language. The members of staff at Veilig Thuis can only speak to you in Dutch. Veilig Thuis is also the place to report any suspicions you may have about domestic violence or child abuse that affects someone you know.
Help
You can ask questions or pour out your feelings. You will be speaking to a care worker on the phone who will listen attentively to what you have to say, answer your questions and give you advice. With your approval, the care worker will also look and see whether there is professional help available for you and if so, which type. If you need to attend an appointment, you can always take someone along with you who speaks Dutch and who can act as an interpreter, should you need this.
The free helpline is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week; just phone 0800-2000.
Frequently asked questions
What is Veilig Thuis and who is it for?
Veilig Thuis is the advice and reporting centre for domestic violence and child abuse. Anyone with concerns — victims, perpetrators, witnesses, family members, neighbours, children or professionals — can contact us for advice or to make a report. Our help is available to people of all ages and backgrounds living in the Oost-Brabant (East Brabant) region.
Is calling 0800-2000 free, and when can I call?
Yes. The national number 0800-2000 is completely free and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week — including weekends and public holidays. You will first hear a recorded message asking for the place where you live, or where the person you are calling about lives; you will then be put through to a member of staff in the right region straight away.
Can I ask for advice anonymously?
Yes. When you call for advice, you do not have to tell us who you are or who you are concerned about. Together we will look at what you can do. If you would then like to make a report, we do need to know who you are — but, when necessary, we can agree not to share your name with the people the report concerns.
What happens after I make a report?
After a report is made, we get in touch with everyone involved to build the clearest possible picture of the situation. We speak with all family members, and sometimes with others involved such as the school or family doctor. We then make a plan — together, wherever possible — to restore safety. We stay in touch a number of times afterwards to check whether the agreements made are working.
